today i found out that one of they guys that i work with just became a grandpa.

aww, yay! isn't that good news!

yeah, it's all well and good but he's 32.

if you're sensitive to stereotypes and don't have much of a sense of humor, please skip this next paragraph.

now, as a brown girl, i'm kinda used to seeing the generation gap get smaller and smaller. for some reason the biological clock of the latina seems to go off at about oh...say, 16 years old. don't get me wrong, i ain't got no problem with baby mamas. in fact, i completely understand why there is such a high pregnancy rate among young girls of my race. Consider the fact that (traditionally) sex isn't something that we talk about openly in our culture, with the fact that we are catholic, with the fact that we aren't as likely to be able to afford abortions and there you have what seems to be a race of girls who get pregnant if you so much as breathe on them. i am the only woman in my family (we're talking grandparents, aunts, cousins and the like) who has made it to the age of 23 and a half years without ever getting pregnant. believe me, it's a big fucking deal.

but being a grandpa at 32!!!!

see the good thing about it is that, he's been with the same woman for at least 20 years.

yes, you heard me right.

in fact they're married and have a pretty good relationship. she shows up at work to have lunch with him like once every two weeks. but...

he had his first daughter when he was 13 years old. second daughter came when he was 17.

so that makes his daughter -who gave birth to a baby boy on monday- 18 years old...

yeah, how do you like them apples?

at this rate, if he lives to be 84, he'll be able to see his great-great-great-great grandchild (assuming 13 years remains the gap).
